Bill's in Summerville is the cheapest of the traditional liquor stores, the big box stores have liquor stores for larger quantities of popular items and you don't need a membership to buy from there, either.
Good selections: Bill's (Summerville), Total Wine (West Ashley), Bottles (Mount Pleasant).
Nicest staff: Carpe Diem (Mount Pleasant), Palmetto 80 (Mount Pleasant). One of the owners at Palmetto 80 used to do shots right out of the cooler with me, but I think he got yelled at by the other owner.
There's a little one on Exchange downtown that has history: It used to be a rum runner disguised as a barber shop during Prohibition.
Up until 4 years ago the best selection and cheapest prices were at Total Wine in West Ashley but for a bottle or two only, the trip might not be worth it. I could get local liquor stores in MTP to make me a deal when I bought a case of something.
For spirits (not wine or beer) I only use Clarey's in MP. Better prices than Bottles, small but very eclectic selection, very nice staff, and if they don't stock it they will get you anything you want within a few days.
I like the folks at Egan's as well. Thing is -- seems to be a theme here. If you don't want to bother building a relationship -- Bottles/Total Wine. You want some personal love.........all of the others mentioned.
I'll cast another vote for Bill's is S'ville. He's the leader based on price alone, and he's also got some good lookin' girls working there. He does a tasting every now and then so check out the board in front of the store.
I guess it depends on where you are located. I know Total is good......but I don't often drive to West Ashley just for booze.
