There is a new neighborhood that borders my property that was just approved to be annexed into Mount Pleasant. I see on the town of Mount Pleasant web site that there is an easy process to be annexed into the town if your property borders the town. Does anyone know the advantages/disadvantages of being in the town versus just staying in Charleston County unincorporated? I see on the town site they claim property taxes are less along with other advantages, but I'm sure they wouldn't list any disadvantages if there are any.
I believe how it works is -- if the Property formerly paid only the Charleston County portion of Real Estate Taxes, there will be an additional levy for the Town of Mount Pleasant. Your Taxes will probably go up.......by how much, nobody knows for sure.
When the Marino Tract (Carolina Park) was being discussed it was in Charleston County, not in Mt Pleasant. Marino wanted MTP water and sewage as the County could not offer both or either??????
This would have meant wells and septic systems for the tract. MTP wanted control over zoning issues. This created a stalemate. Marino said they were going ahead with the County zoning and filed some sort of paperwork to proceed. MTP did not blink. Marino blinked. MTP annexed the Marino Tract.
Remember that MTP owns the MTP water Works and this alone swing quite a bit of weight come development time. Like no tickee, no shirtee.
Your insurance tends to go down when inside the town limits due to fire and police protections.
Taxes would probably go up.
You'd get trash pickup provided by the town.
You'd get to vote in Town elections.
