Thanks to mayor Haynie, Joe Bustos, and those of the "Save Shem Creek" crew who continue to nater about how to reverse the clocks on Mount Pleasant's growth (https://www.postandcourier.com/busin...459f0c1aa.html ), the town may just lose the museum all together.
Of all the things to fight over, it's mind boggling.
To be honest this whole fiasco should be pinned on the MOH folks. I will complain about NIMBYism as much as the next person but it was idiotic to approach a project in a town known to have pretty active zoning and design review requirements/submittals and never engage the town. And the building they proposed is an ego-trip of a joke. I can't even imagine how they intend to maintain a giant white monolith in a pretty unforgiving location in terms of wind, moisture, sun and vegetation. The thing would literal mildew over every other year. And why put it in the middle of the marsh when its really not taking advantage or related to the marsh?
I would stick it in the middle of the country within as close of proximity to major cities as possible. And include a national cemetery since I have read those are becoming full. So basically make this the centerpiece of the next Arlington. It would have actually made more sense to put this in North Charleston on the Old Navy base. They would have been free from most of the regulations and been much less expensive to build. There would also be enough space to incorporate conference facilities and the like to make this useful for multiple uses.
Mount Pleasant has only "known" to have issues recently and doesn't have near the issues of the BAR. They were putting it at Patriot's Point in what's been touted as a tourist's destination for several years. The color isn't the issue. The heart burn has been over the height.
They don't want to put it at the Old Navy base as that's turning into a industry and rail hub, not a tourist location.
While I fully support a MOH museum being a Veteran myself, the design is simply hideous. It looks like a giant popcorn piece of artwork that will blow over the first time we see another major hurricane. The design is my only gripe.
