Hurricane Insurance
Do people who rent apartments in the Charleston have to pay hurricane insurance or is it just home owners who pay hurricane insurance? I am going to be renting an apartment so I am just wondering if I will simply pay for rent and utilities with no other strings attached.

Actually you need what is called renter's insurance, it covers your stuff in the apartment not the apartment itself. If your stuff isn't worth much then it is a waste of money, but if you have that big flat panel tv, a hefty comuter and enough funiture to fill the Taj then you might want to think about it.

renter's insurance
OleTomCat is right -- HOWEVER, one stipulation:
it is quite difficult to get renter's insurance in Charleston. Even though I own my home here, let me relate the fact that many, many companies won't even provide said insurance policies in the Lowcountry. I believe State Farm does, however -- it requires a huge upfront payment (in the 1k range) just to get the policy in force. I could be wrong about this, however....

Renter's insurance...seek it out if you have stuff worth anything.
There is no such thing as "Hurricane Insurance".
Flood insurance, yes. Wind & Hail insurance, yes. Hurricane Insurance, no.

I had no trouble getting renter's insurance... I called GEICO and got it thru one of their companies. (I think it's thru "Travellers").
