I live in a "typical" subdivision in the suburbs of Chicago. I'm sad because I know very few of my neighbors. I've tried to be more proactive in developing relationships with a few of them but people don't even bother to answer the door (I can see through the window that they see me and just don't want to bother)....People don't even wave when they drive by and we're playing outside....It's depressing....

Well, we're moving south. To the Charleston area (yay!). And besides good schools when we need them for the wee ones (ages 3.5 and 1), I'm looking for friendly neighbors. Originally, the focus was on Mt. Pleasant, but am I going to get that "friendly neighbor" vibe there? Living on the northshore of Chicago, I'd like to try to avoid the "keeping up with the Jones's" scene.

FYI - We're looking for newer construction (i.e.- last 10 years with a max budget of $425K) and relatively close to downtown and/or the beach. But, we are also realistic and flexible, and know that we can't have everything.

What are the friendliest areas for really young families? Thanks in advance for any input!

I think you'll be able to find that in Mt. Pleasant. I have plenty of past clients who are in love with their neighborhoods and neighbors in Mt. Pleasant.

I agree. You won't have a problem here.

If you're not looking for the "keeping up with the Jones'" then Mt. Phoney is not for you.

You'll be WAY better off in West Ashley or James Island. Much friendlier people and more bang for your buck there.

I know many people that have moved from Mt. P for the very same reasons that you have mentioned.

Keeping up with the Jones is a personal choice one has to make for themselves...no one forces you to do anything like that. Don't blame that on anyone besides yourself if you fall into that scenario.

Mt. Pleasant is as friendly as any other place. It is what you make of it in most cases.

It's sad how people can come up with derogatory names like "Mt. Phoney" to belittle a place.

You find uppity/pretentious/self-righteous people everywhere. The highest concentration I have found actually live outside Charleston & MtP in a neighboring town where folks like to talk bad about "where the rich people live" (all the while acting exactly like, and even worse than, the people they are supposedly gossiping about).

I'll say again...anyplace you live is what you make of it. Come in with a sour attitude and you'll be miserable and eventually leave with a sour attitude. The opposite is also true.

Mt. Pleasant is a lovely area and has many many very friendly people. You will not be disappointed if you go into a neighborhood with younger families and then get involved in playgroups, church, community activities etc....That's where everyone is!
Because I live in Summerville, and raised my family here, I would encourage you to look there as well. You will get a lot more home for your price and there are lots of neighborhoods with young families that encourage a neighborhood feel...White Gables, Pine Forest Country Club, Legend Oaks, Gadsden Manor, Coosaw Creek Country Club, Cottages of Gahagan, Walnut Farms...to name a few.
Definitely visit both areas!
Sincerely,
Foster
P.S. My daughter and son-in-law live near Frankfort in the Chicago area...she has two little ones 3 &1 yrs old. Judging from her life, you will really enjoy being able to let your kids play outside the majority of the year...little ones+long winter=one exhausted mom. You'll love living down South.

No Jim is not right, but everyone has their own opinion.

Friendly people are EVERYWHERE. When will people understand this and stop talking about MtP simply because part of the population there makes a better than average living? It's a wonderful place.
