Interesting proposal today out of Charleston. Mayer Danny Jones used visuals to announce proposed changes to the TIF District structure that could help fund $45-$60 million in renovations and expansion of the Charleston Civic Center

Mayor proposes tax changes to fund Civic Center renovations* - Breaking News - Charleston Daily Mail - West Virginia News and Sports -

It's been clear for over a decade that the Civic Center was outdated. And with all of the upgrades to the Charleston Town Center, surrounding hotels and planned hotels coming in, it only makes sense to keep up with the times and make a major overhaul to this facility.

Favorite quote: "The renovations would also include the outside of the Civic Center, which City Manager David Molgaard said looks like a "state prison" now."

The citizens will get to pay for it even if they never attend an event at the Civic Center. He wants to impose a .5% city sales tax to pay for it.

I guess you get what you pay for when you hire politicians. I'd never vote for Danny Jones for ANYTHING.

Along with upgrades to the mechanical systems and the like, the inside of the civic center needs a lot of work. All of the drab concrete needs to be painted a brighter color, the same with the ceiling and rafters. Along the concourses, it would be a good idea to cut some window openings out to let in natural light. Also, the civic center needs to have the seats all one color. Those ideas alone would make the civic center much more appealing.

One more thing, its about time the city and the civic center sold the naming rights to the building. That would bring in some much needed capital to help fund these improvements. I have never understood why the naming rights have never been sold. Seems very shortsided.
