That poster is a recent transplant, so does not represent NC

So to use your words "I don't mean to sound like a big jerk" but I'll spend MY hard earned money where I want, whether that's animals or not. I have little pity for the bum begging for money at the corner so that he can go buy some cheap alcohol or cigarettes.
You have a good point that I meant to bring up also. Children and animals can not defend themselves for the most part. Children at least have the government working to protect them (kindof I guess) animals are completely defenseless.....

[quote=NCgirl;17161174]Please don't generalize the entire state based on one person's comments. There are many, many people who care about animals. Unfortunately there are un-spayed and un-neutured pets that produce countless litters that can not be properly cared for. There aren't enough homes for all of them. QUOTE]

YES YES!! All the rescues in the world can't make the difference that spaying and neutering can (not to say that rescues aren't a valuable tool!). I wish there was more publicity and education around spaying and neutering pets. So many people say "oh, she's so cute, we'll let her have just one litter"...

Here are a few groups you may want to contact. I don't know anything about them so I can't tell you if they are good or bad. Even if it's not exactly what you're looking for, they may point you in the right direction.

Charlotte Animal Welfare

Animal Adoption League

I don't think badly of people in NC. I love NC....that's why I want to move there. You have it right about animals not being fixed. That's why it takes people that care and love animals to get out there and make a difference. People need the option to get low cost spay and neuters and need to be educated on what happans to these litters of puppies that are dumped off at animal control. I've been to these places many times in Charlotte....in particular Gastonia. These puppies almost never make it out alive...such a shame. That is why I've come down many times. Where I live in the north puppies almost never are put down. So I've come down and brought them up...along with big dogs (and cats) and found them great homes up here.

Yes....heard that many times. Just irks the crap out of me. I think the people that keep letting their animals have litter after litter of puppies/kittens and then put them up for free to a good home or dump them at animal control should have to tour the facility and see what their fate is. It is not animal controls fault, they are just cleaning up after those that are irresponsible with their animals. Do you know I actually had someone tell me one time when I was in Robeson County Animal Control (eastern NC) that having their animal fixed would interfere with their sex life

I have a rescue in NC that I run from Milwaukee....although we haven't been able to do much lately. But my ideas for when I come down there would be to get some spay neuter clinics going. And actually there is a group of people in the Gastonia area that have started a low cost spay/neuter in the area and they have fixed a lot of animals....which is great!

Mecklenburg County Animal Care and Control also has a free spay/neuter clinic, and the Humane Society has a low cost clinic. But the wait for the county clinic is 7-8 months, and I believe it's more than 4 months for the Humane Society clinic. That's encouraging from the standpoint that people are using the services, but discouraging from the standpoint that even with those kinds of wait times, it's only taking care of a fraction of the population that needs the service.

I agree that's why people need more options!

Sadly, Bob Barker has retired, and all hope vanished with him.

I don't really buy the whole animals are defenseless creatures thing, because they are not. All creatures, including human, puppies and kittens, have defense mechanisms, because we are all part of the food chain.

You appear to be sincerely interested in a good deed, but I think that for some people, the line between doing good deeds, and acting self rightous can blur sometimes, which is why people get a little testy. I wish you luck in your move and your job.
