I guess I'm directing this more toward all the transplants living here. Is it really that bad, or something a northeast native wouldn't bat an eye over?? And is it more a question of congestion when one wants to drive to Charlotte, or just all around traffic knocking around the towns running errands. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Lake Norman area commute is not really horrific - except at evening commute times it does get clogged on 77 between 23 and 36. Other than Brawley School Rd everything here is pretty good.
Brawley School Rd - I would prefer cutting off my arm with a plastic spoon (a knife would make it too easy) than drive that on a regular basis.
During the week or weekends it is not bad (except during NASCAR race weeks when everyone is over this way hitting the race shops)
Sometimes, when the weather is nice, traffic slows down to look at the boats on the lake... What should be a roughly 40 minute drive from Uptown to Mooresville once took 2 hours, and many days averaged close to an hour/1.5 hours.
I did that commute for one year - that was more than enough. I moved closer to town the next chance I got. Going from exit 36 to exit 18... my commute hasn't been longer than 20 minutes now. ::knock on wood::
I have lived in Cornelius for almost 12 years, and I do not think traffic is an issue at all. I have only had to go to Charlotte a few times during rush hour traffic, and even then it has been extremely bearable. My sister-in-law travels from Cornelius to South Charlotte for work every morning during rush hour, and it takes her about 45 minutes to get there.
What if you are going in the opposite direction, say Ballyntine (sp.?) or Providence Road area to Huntersville?
If you are going to just Huntersville, then it's not bad if you don't go any further than Exit 23 heading North on I-77. (Gilead Rd. in Huntersville) Beyond that, it's a pain no matter which way you are going. Your bigger issue will be getting out of the Providence Rd. Ballentyne area. The highway there is overloaded. Once they finsh I-485 in a few years, you can just take that (counter clock wise) and miss most of the traffic.
It's easily a 60 - 75+ mile round trip though. Not something I would want to do everyday.

You've still got to get from Ballantyne with a bazillion others as far as uptown before it becomes smooth sailing. Personally, I would not do that commute. If you work in Huntersville I say try to live in Huntersville
The entire Lake Norman area is extremely congested in general... I'm not just talking 77 either, it's very congested in town and getting across town, as well.

Agreed.
Think about this... 4 lanes go down to 2 on I-77 north... do you think that wont cause big congestion.

The eastern side of Lake Norman is congested. Surprisingly enough, the entire Lake Norman area includes more than just the stretch of 77 between MM 23 and 36.
I'm going to go back to snuggling 16 now.
