Why do people always assume that if you live in this area you are a NASCAR fan? In our neighborhood there are an abundance of OSU(not Oregon State or Oklahoma State) banners, I have not seen one Nascar banner or car number. Someone on this forum states they saw a bumper sticker that read, GO BUCKEYES, YES GO HOME.
I was born in Ohio.

I agree with nacmd70. When I move ddown here 16 years ago, it seemed like there was a lot more NASCAR branding in the city, but that may have been because the job I had was ever so slightly related to NASCAR so it may have been more top of mind for me. There is an enormous amount of people from Ohio in Charlotte. I have afriend who lives in the Akron area. When we visit her, we never see license plates from anywhere but Ohio. Down here, it's hard to ignore the enormous number of out of state plates, particularly from OH, MI, NY. Not to mention bumper stickers, clothing, etc. I remember being very confused a few years back when I learned that people were fans of teams of schools they didn't go to. Seemed so strange to me back then but now when I see vast amounts of people with Ohio sweats on, I don't assume.

I think the main reason people think Charlotte loves NASCAR is because it's where the NASCAR Hall of Fame is located.

There are plenty of older neighborhoods in Charlotte, some are walkable with parks, locally-owned pubs/restaurants, and trendy shops and art galleries. Those neighborhoods have been mentioned in this thread by people who ACTUALLY KNOW the city and get out to enjoy themselves. There is plenty of local flavor, and all the things you can do in any city of comparable size to Charlotte (sans a zoo!). You just have to know where to look, and ask people in online forums! The architecture of the housing in Charlotte is different than what you find in old neighborhoods in Metropolitan Ohio, so the feel of these neighborhoods will be different. After finding out what neighborhoods to check out, come down, get some coffee or eat at a sidewalk cafe in one of these areas; people watch, etc. and you will see that you will probably enjoy it here. I have lived here for over 5 years and still have yet to meet an avid NASCAR fan, or go to a race. The culture will be different than in Ohio, but you should find plenty here to fit in to. Good luck!

Charlotte is much, much less "urban" than Atlanta, Boston or Chicago. How much less "urban" you can stand might matter. I have visited Columbus once and liked it, but it was for just a weekend for a convention. Can't compare.

I don't know where you get the idea that you have to have NASCAR or country music in your life one iota if you move to Charlotte (or NC in general, but Charlotte in particular). It's not as if they're going to be playing banjos on your front lawn while waiting for the race to come through your neighborhood...you don't like it, don't participate in it. I am a native North Carolinian and have hardly ever given NASCAR half a thought, and like any genre of music, if you don't like country (or opera or 80s or rap), change the station. what kind of backwoods image did you have of this state (Charlotte especially!)?

Yes, Olde Meck's brews are very good. If you don't want to go to their brewery, you can find them on tap at many restaurants around Charlotte.
