Hi,
My family is going to be visiting the Charlotte area for a week in mid-April. We'd really appreciate some suggestions about some areas to visit for possible relocation. We are moving for the better weather and proximity to family.
My job can be done from home, so our main consideration is good schools for our 7 and 9 year olds. I've researched the NC report card site and tried to relate those results to the real estate info.
We would prefer to be in an area where there is less traffic involved with day to day activities (shopping, library, YMCA, etc.).
We are planning to spend between $250 - 350K on a house that's less than 20 years old and really would like to have a some sort of yard -- say 0.4 acre minimum. Also, a neighborhood with families and kids would be great.
Union County: Price Mill, Wesley Oaks, Silver Creek, Somerset, Hunter Oaks, The Reserve
Mecklenburg: Thornhill, Amberleigh, Providence West, Providence Crossing, Wynridge Estates, Providence Plantation, Raintree
You will have many choices in your price range. Have your realtor drive you through and around these neighborhoods so you can get a good sense of the area as well as the subdivision itself.
You can also check out North of Charlotte in Concord (Cabarrus County). Some neighborhoods:
Highland Creek, Cannon Crossing, Moss Creek, Skybrook, Winding Walk. They are all near each other with very good schools - elementary through High school.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Anyone know some good sites for real estate searches for the area? All the ones I find are missing key info like square feet and lot size on a lot of listings.

The Charlotte MLS only allows a square footage range, not actual square feet. You get that when you have an appraiser in before a closing. This is to encourage buyers to look at actual use of space and not just the bottom line numbers. Buying at a price per square foot is really only useful in new home construction when an area/neighborhood is still being developed. In existing, established areas square footage is truly of small consequence when compared to other factors.
Personally, I like the Allen Tate website for home searches - it's very comprehensive and includes all homes in MLS, not just its own listings
Also check in the South check on the other side of the border (around 15 miles away from center of Charlotte)...
York County - Fort Mill, SC - Schools are great, lower taxes, area around Baxter community has all you are asking for.
