wife and i are thinking about the big move. Coming in for a short visit at the end of August. We have some neighborhoods in mind in terms of relocating to:

Iredell (Mooresville), Cabarrus (Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg), Union (Monroe),

Providence Downs
Kingsmead
Weddington Chase
Huntersville, Cornelius, & Mooresville, Waxhaw

We are hooking up with a Realtor to check out some Houses/Apts in the above areas.

In addition to looking at houses we would also like to to visit some common spots where the locals go. i.e. Malls, fun spots, shopping areas, restaurants...maybe a good pizzeria

Its only a few days so wont get to see much. We just want to mingle with the locals and see how everyone lives. Any ideas/suggestions are appreciated.

Be sure to ask your realtor about traffic in whatever you choose to live. It can vary significantly around here.

As far as malls go, I don't think there is really anything special here. If you have a Simon Mall in your town, you have probably already been to the exact same stores.

For shopping, if you like artsy stuff you might like NoDa Home - Charlotte's Historic Arts District. Not a whole lot of shops but some interesting ones and a good used book store. Cabo Fish Taco is also an excellent place to eat.

If you are here on a Thursday go check out EpiCentre | Alive After Five. Lots of different people there, just don't wear your hat backwards.

My favorite restaurant around here that is more unique to the area is http://www.mckoys.net/. Great fried green tomatoes and BBQ.

Suggestions on being a "local" eh? Obviously, I can't possibly speak for all Charlotteans, but this is what I did today. I woke myself and my step son up at Noon (my day off today). We caught a 1 O'clock light rail train into uptown from Tyvola Station (closest station to the house). We arrived at the Childress Klein YMCA uptown for a little basketball and weight lifting (step son is 16 years old and wishes to get his "weight up" for sports). After shooting hoops, step son grabbed a smoothie at the Smoothie King located just outside of the entrance to the YMCA. From Smoothie King, we walked via the Overstreet Mall to Epicentre. At Epicentre, we met up with my wife who rode the train in from work. The three of us decided to watch the movie "Cowboys and Aliens" at Epicentre Theaters. My wife and son had popcorn while I treated myself to a turkey burger (yes, you can eat REAL food at this movie theater). From there, we rode the train home to chill out at our pool.

I'm not sure if the above is exactly what you were looking for. I just didn't want to tell you about a bunch of "tourist-like" things to do when you are looking to see what "normal" life is like here. For some, it's hanging out at the mall. For others, its the gym. For some of us, its uptown. In all honesty, most folks (in this heat) hang out at home.

This is considered to be one of the best BBQ places in the state. Bridges Barbecue Lodge, Shelby . However, since you plan to look north, east, & south of Charlotte, but not west of Charlotte, it might not fit into your schedule. Good luck.

A morning in Davidson is a lovely way to start the day: breakfast at Toast and a bit of shopping when the stores open. We finish with smoothies at Ben and Jerry's.

Birkdale Village - any time but especially Friday or Saturday evening. Davidson for farmers market or 1st and 3rd Sunday for concerts on the green.
