My son is running in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships at McAlpine Park in Charlotte. The lodging blocks are sold out. Any tips for a safe, comfortable place for a few families to stay a couple of nights? Maybe in a shopping area where the teens can roam without concern? Anywhere within 30-40 minutes away would be great.

I appreciate your help!

Would Matthews, NC be okay? It's close-by, and has several places with good Tripadvisor reviews.

There's a Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn and Comfort Inn all in the same area - Independence & Sam Newell, maybe 10 minutes from McAlpine Park.

Hampton Inn

Holiday Inn Express

Comfort Inn

There are several strip shopping centers there, lots of restaurants, and the "dollar" movies (now more than a dollar, but still cheap! $1.50 or $2, I think.) Ooh, and Krispy Kreme! It's a short drive to another shopping center at Independence & 51, with a Best Buy, GameStop, Old Navy, Starbucks, etc.

Even closer is a Fairfield Inn and a Best Western - they're not far from a shopping center with a Wal-Mart and GameStop, as well as Caribou Coffee and some fast food places, and other stores.

Fairfield Inn

Best Western

Wow, I thought there were a few hotels out that way - I never noticed exactly how many!

Thank you all so much. All I've checked are sold out, though. Aargh!

I was afraid of this, which is why we were thinking we would go up to 30-40 minutes from the race site. I'm sure we'll find something today.

Ideas welcome!

Try the ones in Fort Mill, SC near Carowinds Amusement Park. It is not too far from McAlpine, but maybe because it is in SC the hotels won't be sold out yet? Found a link of Carowinds preferred hotels below. Good luck!

Carowinds (City Visitor Charlotte, North Carolina)

P.S. Also do a web search on a site like Kayak and enter Fort Mill, SC as your destination because the link above does not have all of the available hotels listed in the area.

SouthPark is about 10 miles from McAlpine Park - there are LOTS of hotels in that area, a big mall, restaurants, and other shopping.

SouthPark Hotels

It would be easy to get to McAlpine Park from there - go east on Fairview (which changes names several times!), right onto Monroe, and McAlpine Park will be on your left. You can see the green park and lake on the map.

Thank you SO MUCH. I really appreciate it. Maybe it's my City Data karma paying off from all the Nashville questions I've answered

Update- we had to cancel. We're saving this info for next year, though. As soon as they announce the date, we're booking.

Thanks again!
