Greetings all,

I plan to buy carpet to be installed in my SC home. I bought the carpet from a business in Charlotte, NC. He told me he had to collect the tax.

I came from PA, and the last time we bought carpet I believe it was exempt from sales tax because it was attached to the home, or something like that.

Does anyone have info on this question? I will also post in the Fort Mill, SC forum (if this is not against the rules.)

Default Why wouldn't I pay?

The reason I asked was because we recently relocated from PA. In PA, you did NOT have to pay tax on carpeting that was installed in your house. So I asked because I did not know the tax rules here in either SC or NC.

Of course I will pay if that is what is expected and required by the law. Just inquiring as a relatively new resident.

That carpeting lobby in PA must be a force to be reckoned with.

Actually, I think it had something to do with work inside your residence that was "attached" rather than added free standing. For example, the same tax exclusion applied when we bought and installed windows. Since they were part of the house, there was no sales tax due. I am trying to think of other things, but my mind is blanking right now.

Apparently, no such exclusion here, so I am glad to be in the south and ready to pay the taxes due!!

No such exemptions here in NC for carpet or home building materials. I recommend buying off the Internet from an out of state dealer.

How would one know the actual color and feel of a carpet they can't see or touch?

Have them send you samples. It's how I did it for my hardwood floors.
