There are numerous versions of it. What I've seen in my friends homes is basically foil backed foam board. It can be cut with a razor knife to fit between joists so retroing it in isn't a problem. I've also seen it in rolls, though I've not seen that in use.

In a well insulated house, the potential cost savings are not worth it if you don't have it. The savings are very small and the stuff becomes less effective if it gets dusty which will happen in a ventilated attic.

That makes sense... Yes, in my house it looks like your typical roofing plywood on top and the face down side has a layer of foam with the reflective foil over that. Significant difference in electric bills from previous much smaller house without it and this one. You can feel the temp difference in the attic. When compared with the costs to have to done it already paid for itself in one Summer (actually more).
