I think they should have walkways from the parking lots to the terminal. I almost set about walking myself but didn't fancy the muck.
They have reduced the manned gates, but they are still there. Most of the lanes are pre-paid (shuttle stop at the terminal or garages) or credit card. The introduction of the extra terminals seems to have eased the congestion that used to develop at the exits at peak times. They also seem to have increased the frequency of the shuttles from the Daily East/West. Used to be long waits and lots of people, especially on pickup from the terminal.

I never have understood why the shuttle route is so inefficient. Instead of exiting the parking area to the right of the terminal and being close, the route goes all the way around. And coming back, the shuttle goes all the way around the loop instead of entering close to where the parking booths are.

Oh - and yes, hourly parking is still available - just parked there yesterday. Entrance is just on the other side of the terminal...

High rollers use hourly parking as 'long-term' parking.
As cheap as parking is at CLT, I don't blame 'em. Especially for work trips. My company wouldn't blink at paying $17 bucks a day for parking.

We love the hourly parking at CLT. My understanding is that when they finish building the new decks the new hourly parking will be too far to walk. That is really unfortunate.

What we do now, whether dropping off or picking up a passenger, is park in the hourly deck very close to the terminal, walk over, escort our friend (or son) to the security line, watch him go through, then return to our car, usually exiting without having to pay for parking. When picking up we meet the passenger at baggage claim or intercept them when they come out upstairs, also very often able to time this so we exit without having to pay for parking.
