We will be relocating to Charlotte within the next two years and could use some help. My husband's job will be moving to Ballantyne. We are looking to buy a house in mid 300 price range in a family oriented community. We have two children who will be in elementary school...so 1. we are looking for great schools and 2. a culturally diverse area. We are a interracial couple (filipino and caucasian) living in NJ now so I am concerned that the lack of diversity will be a cultural shock for us. I have read mixed reviews on this issue in the Charlotte area.
So far I have read that Providence Springs elementary is a great a school and have done some research on subdivisions in this area. Can anybody tell me more about this area? I have also looked into Weddington which is supposed to have an excellent school system as well...any thoughts?

The only shock you will experience if you move to Charlotte is the discovery that this stereotype isn't true. Nobody in CLT will care what race or culture you are from unless you make an issue out of it. Here's a tip for you. If you really want "culturally diverse" (whatever that means) I wouldn't be looking to live in middle class suburbia in a $300K McMansion built in a planned community. Go look at Charlotte's inner city neighborhoods instead.

glad to hear that the stereotype isnt true frewroad but are you saying that we will only find culturally diverse aka multiple ethnicities in inner city neighborhoods and that it doesnt exist in middle class suburban communities?
I have lived here for a year, and before that NYC. I found what frewroad said was true. While my family is far from diverse and I probably have little to say on the matter, I did move from NYC, and have noticed Charlotte to be much more diverse than its reputation. Providence Springs has a larger percentage of Asians than other schools. Go to its school report card on the CMS web site. All ose neighborhoods you mentioned are very family oriented and people love them. But, it is mini mall central.

We ended up in Chantilly, basically 2 miles east of uptown Charlotte. We needed to be close to the city. The move has been easy with little adjustment, except for us, probably the suburban feel was the hardest. Also, even as a church going person, I found, and continue to find, the church culture huge. But, there seems no pressure to participate if you dont want to, its just everywhere. Bible verses in the Y still shock me, but again, there are all sorts of members. The weather is great down here and people are friendly! Good luck!
Some of my MetLife relocating friends w/ kids are considering this same area, so I'm curious about the Providence Springs community, too, and what's all about. A lot of people want a nice family community with a short commute to Ballantyne, if that's possible.
Our office provided us with some crime stats for Charlotte and many people are a bit nervous, especially since crime seems higher (per capita) than where we are in the Northeast, but it certainly depends on the area.
