We live in western union county and since the day before yesterday we noticed this smell in tap water. Hard to describe what it is like, but it might be in the category of either chemical or fuel/solvent. It is more noticeable in hot water, although cold water also has the odor but less strong. The odor becomes weaker when you leave the water in open air for some time. We checked with our friends who live a few houses down the road and they also had the same kind of odor in their tap water, but not as strong as ours.

So if you live in Waxhaw/Weddington area, could you get a glass of hot tap water and see if you can smell the odor? I am wondering if the water source may have changed somehow.

I haven't noticed anything at all, and neither has the rest of family. We live in Waxhaw.

I'm near Target, and I haven't experienced anything like that. Could it be just your neighborhood? Maybe a builder hit a pipe or something? I'd report it to someone, that can't be good.

Thanks for the responses. I think I figured out the source of the problem. We just installed a portable washer, and the hose and connectors that came with it was oily with smelly rubber sealers. I am replacing them and hopefully the odor will go away.
