I've found myself with an early flight on Sunday, arriving before noon, weekday meetings in Gastonia, and a return flight very late in the evening. My entire previous experience with the area has been changing planes at the airport.

Anything particularly interesting to do in Charlotte/Gastonia/Kings Mountain on a Sunday afternoon?

How is the Sunday brunch at Heist Brewery? Is the surrounding area (NoDa?) quiet on a Sunday afternoon? Are any of the state/county/etc parks particularly interesting, worth visiting just for sightseeing and light hiking? Anything else not to be missed?

Barbecue is obviously an important component of NC cuisine. Is there any one restaurant in the area I should make sure to visit (or avoid), BBQ or otherwise?

I would hit up Midwood Smokehouse in Plaza-Midwood. Can walk around the area, or head over to Uptown for a stroll. I typically stick to Dilworth/Freedom Park/Latta Park for my Sunday walks and lunches.

I'd also suggest a hike at Crowder's mountain in King's Mountain (probably earlier in the day).

Weather is supposed to be beautiful today. If you're up for a solid hike, definitely check out Crowder's mountain.

If you want to get outdoors, the Whitewater Center is excellent for an afternoon.
