We only really watch TV in the living room, but have 2 TV's in other rooms. We get this error msg a lot now.

Get your TV picture back. This channel is only available in digital format. Order your digital adapter today.

Customer Support | Time Warner Cable Digital Signal

A: I don't want to rent for a digital adapter. That's why we I only have one cable box.
B: How do I get around this, I don't mind buying on online. I did this for my cable modem and it works great!

We have a Roku in each room, and with the TWC App we can watch tv without having to pay a monthly fee for a cable box. You can probably get a refurbished Roku pretty cheap, and it'd save money in the long run.

It's pretty silly that they require you to use a box. We only have a box in one room, and we never use it. The Guide is so clunky and the Tivo is so slow that we just use the Roku to watch tv in that room. So we pay, what, $13/month for a box that we never use, but we're not able to just turn in the box?

A lot of people are dropping the cable TV service and putting up an antenna.

If an when you get access to ATT U-verse, give it a try. And, at the end of the contract period, usually on year, they WILL negotiate and sometimes give a better deal than the initial contract. We tried TW no contract and after six months went back to ATT. Depending on the shows to which one is addicted, over-the-air antennas and adapters (if necessary) is cheap and you will get 20 to 25 channels depending on your location and antenna. If I were not out voted (she gets two votes according to her rules of marriage ) I would drop cable, ATT, satellite and get a good antenna.

I have an old Roku that I gave my parents since I didn't need it anymore.

Do all the Roku players work with TWDC?

Time Warner is offering the digital adapter free until the end of 2014. After that it's $1.00 a month (for now). You could always try it and decide if you don't like it.

I've got an old Roku (pretty sure its a Roku 1) in a guest bedroom. Just add the TWC channel to Roku, works like any other channel as long as you authenticate with TWC, you have to be a current TWC subscriber. You don't get all the channels but you get most of them. Some channels still work if you have newer LCD that still has a cable jack, its just hard to find a channel guide and it seems like they come and go.

The only problem with using the TW app on the Roku, is that you don't get any of the local broadcast channels (CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox and PBS). Other than that, for the rest of the cable lineup, you're good to go. Also, if you have HBO, you can download the HBO Go app and watch most HBO programs when you want.

You need to get the digital converter adapter (I think you get the first two free). This is just a small box that lets you watch the channels. It has its own remote but it does not do anything fancy like giving you a guide or letting you record or pause TV. It works fine if you are just a basic TV watcher.

TWC is moving away from the unencrypted (clear QAM) channels so its getting harder to just plug your TV into your cable without some sort of box or adapter.

Eventually all cable systems will require a cable box or an adapter, as clear qam and analog cable is going away. And I still recommend a good antenna as a back up for cable or satellite, as you will receive all local channels in HD.
