Check out some of the sub-divisions in Huntersville. It is a sub-burb and only like 20 minutes from Charlotte while being cheaper but just as nice as the Ballantyne area. Definitely check out Birkdale Village in Huntersville as well, a great place to take your family on weekends, for dinner, etc.
Check out Uptown Charlotte/Business district in Charlotte. Very beautiful during the day and where a lot of the jobs are at.
These are some more good suggestions. Birkdale and Ballantyne are some really nice areas. Uptown is a good place to hang out and wander around.
Lots of young families move to Sedgefield and Madison Park, you may want to take a drive around there and stop at a few open houses. From there you could drive up to East Blvd and park near Freedom Park. Walk through Freedom Park, and then back to East Blvd for lunch. Drive thru Myers Park and check out the houses you (and I) can't afford, and then check out Elizabeth (which you might be able to afford) and 7th St, and end up in Plaza Midwood/Central Ave/Commonwealth. This is another area where younger families can still afford a reasonable home. End with dinner at Midwood Smokehouse, or Three Amigos, or, if you're feeling adventurous, try a Vietnamese place with no English on the signage.
