Hi All,
I am visiting Charlotte this coming weekend to get a feel for the Charlotte atmosphere and do house hunting. I know it's July 4th weekend and it might be a little busier. I am focusing in Indian Trail, Matthews, and the neighboring towns. When not house hunting I'll be driving around scoping out the places. Any tips on places to see to make sure that Charlotte is a good fit. I will have my wife and 2 small children (1 and 4).

I don't think thats an answerable question until you provide more information. What are you looking for that would make it a "good fit"?

Forget about the "good fit" part, but in order to help clarify. I am basically looking for shopping centers, restaurants, fun things to do (with the kids), parks, and activities that might be in the center of town.

I would skip Carowinds with kids those ages. You could go to the White Water center and walk around.

The Schiele Museum is in Gastonia. Your kids are probably too young but they have outdoor displays that they'd enjoy. Part of the outdoor displays includes replicas of buildings for a colonial farm with animals.

You mention it might be busier that time, but it actually may be quieter traffic wise as a lot of people leave town for the 4th. I'm listing below things in the greater Charlotte area for you for children (c) and shopping (s) just for your own research.

I'm not personally the biggest fan of the Matthews area so hopefully someone with more knowledge can give you better ideas.

Good Luck in your search!

Uptown :
Discovery Place (c)
ImaginOn/Children's Theater of Charlotte (c)
Ray's Splash Planet (c)
There is also the Charlotte Knights which has a home game during that period with fireworks.
Romare Bearden park (next to baseball stadium) is having a festival as well I think.

Southpark:
The whole area is a huge mall and shopping plazas (s)
While not for kids specific there is a Charlotte symphony concert in the park there on July 3rd - people bring blankets and picnic stuuff

North Charlotte/Lake Norman:
Latta Plantation area has the Raptor Center and Horses (K)
Birkdale Village (s)
(There''s also a great BBQ place right there called Lancaster BBQ)

North Charlotte/Concord:
Concord Mills (s) has the Aquarium (c) and huge arcade there is also a Great Wolf Lodge (water-park thing)

Lazy 5 Ranch is a drive through zoo. Great opportunity to get close to an ostrich or a cow.

OP, be aware many of these suggestions are not near the "center of town". Some are in neighboring counties.
