What towns would you recommend for a young family, with good proximity to the airport area? Budget around 300k. Friends have recommended the Lake Wylie area.
Is commuting from Mooreville to the airport too congested? From a rural town, so we are used to long commute times (up to an hour). But don't want to be tied up in traffic every single day.

The airport is on the west side of Charlotte. Traffic going into Charlotte from the west is least congested. For instance, it's about a 30 minute drive from Kings Mountain to the airport, if you are reasonably close to I 85 or US 74. If you are reasonably close to US 74 in Belmont, it's about a 15 minute drive. These times include rush hour. It all depends on what you want.
I live in Huntersville and work at the airport. Takes me about 20-25 minutes to get to work most days. For some reason traffic seems worse in the evening and it can take about 10 minutes longer sometimes.
Stay away from South Charlotte and the I-77 corridor going into South Carolina if possible. Fort Mill has great schools but the commute north on the I-77 is a nightmare and it's EVERY SINGLE DAY. The backups and accidents typical start early (before 7:30) and before you even reach the I-485 from the south. Unfortunately it's only going to get worse as the Charlotte region is exploding in population and Lake Wylie and areas further west get built up.
Tryon Street has also become a nightmare during rush hour too and needs to be widened to three lanes (it's the future Independence blvd on the west side of the city IMO). On the east side of Charlotte avoid having to take Independence Blvd. (US 74) into the city if you can, because it's the same thing. Avoid these routes when looking for a home if possible.
My recommendation would be to look on the west side of the city, but stay outside the beltway and the 77 (you'll see why) or look further north in Mooresville / Lake Norman area. Again, keep in mind that southbound traffic on the 77 into the City can get quite bad as well.
