There are several types of BBQ in the region. What type do you consider "authentic?" We use pork primarily here . . . and some chicken . . . beef - not so much. Also, several types of sauces, w/ vinegar based more prevalent in east and tomato based in other areas. IN SC, you will find mustard based.
If you use the search feature on the forum, you will find a lot of threads where people have recommended BBQ joints/restaurants. I prefer making my own to anyone's around here, LOL. So I am not the best person to recommend BBQ in CLT, altho I do enjoy Lexington style BBQ and eastern style vinegar based BBS (Rocky Mount area) and occasionally - SC style.
Anyway - maybe others will post their recommendations, but meanwhile, try the search and see what pops up there.
Thanks for the info everyone. I'm not a huge bbq (as I prefer the sweet sauces to smokey) but bf is one. He likes everything as far as beef or pork. I'll do my research on here and check out the places others have recommended..
Mullman - my parents lived in Salisbury years back and every weekend, they knew to have my BBQ from Blackwelders ready when I got there. YUM!!!!
Y, I have not found anything locally (Charlotte proper) that can match these small town flavors.
Arts on Morehead is OK, Spankys is OK, but I still prefer the small town stuff (Salisbury, ect).
Besides, my grandparents are still alive and occasionally we meet them at Hendrix or College BBQ (both Salisbury) or Darrells (Rockwell).

Please do yourself a favor and check out Mac's Speed Shop on South Blvd near uptown in Charlotte! The brisket is just awesome too! Their homemade sweet sauce is to die for.
I agree with the above recommindations nothing beats good authentic western BBQ like you will find in Winston Salem, Salisbury or Lexington area.
I will give high props to Rafferty's across the street of 485 Lynx station. It cooked different and uses a different sauce like you put on BBQ chicken but they hickory smoke their BBQ, Ribs and Boneless Chicken. Cool looking lodge look inside and of course we had to watch the Race on the wide screen TV beside the fireplace, that our table was right at and it wasnt near the bar..
You can smell the hickory cooking outside
Nice
