Haha. Native Son is crushing all the chicken littles with facts and logic. May be lost on them though.

In the spirit of full disclosure, if you set the the event-horizon back far enough you'll see that there are higher numbers of crime in P-M as compared to Barclay Downs. And higher numbers of violent crimes (or crimes against the person). But I don't think it's an epidemic.

More people in a smaller area generates more crime. Crime is higher around places that serve booze. And there are a lot of people living near places that serve booze in P-M (and NoDa, and Southend). The crime bump correlates to the risk-tolerance of folks who enjoy bar hopping (the kiddos, mainly).

It's still worth mention that most crimes are preventable with a modicum of caution, no matter where you live. If you engage in risky behavior your odds go up.

Acknowledging both may involve sexual and other forms of assault, cause bodily injury, result in (quicker) death than on average, local media and many people take more direct note of bodily injury and more immediate death than drug offenses (alcohol-related and other). For privacy reasons, the link mentions "Sex crimes are omitted to protect a victim's privacy."

Perhaps I missed it, but the linked info from the local rag's rather simplified crime map does not appear to include any reference to neighborhood population levels, age, socioeconomic categories, etc. Again, I may have missed related helpful details. If so, my bad. However, such information may help draw reasonable comparisons of average crime levels and categories in different neighborhoods (PM, South Park, etc.).

Yeah I'd expect that to be true. I'm an advocate for unbiased facts and statistics with context. Would love to find a zip code based archive of all crimes but I can't seem to find it. Don't get me wrong - I think awful crimes like the ones from PM recently are awful, but to take them as indicative of an areas decay or to say that it means you can't walk at night anymore is fear mongering. Your last paragraph is spot on.

It all boils down to demographics and diversity.

PM is just a quick jog away from (what used to be) Piedmont Courts. Add to that the Parkwood Ave corridor and it all makes sense. PM is gentrification-in-progress just like Wilmore (Southend) and Brightwalk (Double Oaks).

Some rather general stuff, but woefully inadequate to draw too many reasonable conclusions. Unfortunately, expecting the Observer, other local media sources, or a certain web forum to provide better factual information and analytical insights is an uphill push. If the local rag's or TV stations' reporters aggressively conducted more research, pursued more details, etc., much more, and better, stuff, could enhance typical minimalist reporting.

For example, demographic and socioeconomic data, population density, age ranges, education levels, employment rates, median home values & ranges, ownership v rental rates, walk-ability ratings, etc. Guess that's asking a wee bit too much for a 2-bit publication, stations, etc. However, it would not be overly challenging for good reporters and other media sources to obtain and report additional and far more revealing information.

Redundant, yet certainly consistently awful.
