Armed citizens are the people who caused the killings at VT, NIU, and at Wendy's yesterday.

But there are only like 5000 people living there.

There are no quick answers. America will not be giving up it's guns, so lets work within the system we have. And honestly no system will be perfect. I can can carry 20 guns and so can a person next to me, but if someone walks up to me who looks fairly normal, and shots us, we wouldn't even have time to react. Sad Sad state. This kid will be finding a new school.

Update: This incident at App State was a hoax (http://www.charlotte.com/109/story/520500.html - broken link)

I hope some tough legislation has been pass after 9-11 so this individual can get full punishment.

That's why I said "rate". Most deaths caused by handguns in Canada are drunk hunters who accidentally shoot themselves.

Potential solution - Stop posting these guys names and pictures all over the news the next day. It seems they all want notoriety, so deny them that. What do you think?

Overall, these things represent a sad comment on american social culture. And yes, Boone is a very safe town.

Well, it's my thread so I sanction a bit of a drift here, LOL, even tho I believe this is quite pertinent.

Although this incident at AppState was bogus (Thank God), the sad truth is, most of the incidents we have in this country w/ random acts of violence have to do w/ mental illness and/or depression. I am not talking about domestic violence or criminal acts . . . I am talking about people who are in a psychotic state and act out w/ violence against others.

Part of my professional work involves writing material for behavioral mental health organizations.

Please, if you suspect someone you work with or someone in your family or circle of friends needs help w/ depression . . . encourage them to seek help, get a mental health evaluation . . . so much can be done w/ meds and therapy . . . depression is a brain chemistry problem that can be addressed and people can be restored to good health. Please help dispel the myths that surround mental health - the stigma that often keeps people from seeking help or urging their friends and family to seek help.

Good health includes good mental health, not just good physical health.

There's irony in here somewhere.

Ok let me rephrase armed citizens to say more armed responsible citizens. These irresponsible citizens or better yet low life criminals are given victims on a silver platter with these "Gun Free Zones." They feed off these areas because they know law abiding citizens will not be armed and thus unable to defend themselves. So yes, more responsible citizens should be armed to leave the criminals guessing as to who will fight back and who will not. These random acts of violence will lessen because the criminals will not know who has a gun and who does not. And for the criminals that don't care, they will likely shoot down less victims than they intended because someone like me was armed and killed them on the spot.

Last note and I don't have the stats in front of me, but I think it's 14/15 of the states with the highest crime rates are states with the strictest gun laws. Stricter gun laws do nothing but make purchasing firearms more difficult for law abiding citizens. Criminals don't go through proper channels in the first place, so the laws are pointless.
