Happy New Year all.

DH and I are still contemplating a move to Charlotte. We recently returned from an outing with a Charlotte realtor and really enjoyed the area. Unfortunately, housing in Charlotte, particularly within a 30 minute commute to uptown, appears to be 50% higher than our area. It may even be a little higher. We are currently looking at areas which feed into Myers Park HS primarily due to DH's insistence on shorter commute times. (Barclay Downs, Foxcroft, Summerlake, Cotswold, Dilworth). The realtor also showed us some homes in Royden which feeds into South Meck High. The lot sizes were larger and the cost per square footage was significantly lower. Obviously, the downside is the high school which does not appear to be rated as highly as MP (or Providence). I would consider areas feeding into Providence, but I think anything in Providence is too far from uptown.

Those of you who have children in SMHS, could you give me your impressions? I tried to search the forum, but it was difficult to find anything on 'South Mecklenburg' specifically as the search function returned threads with 'south' and 'mecklenburg' anywhere within the text body and not necessarily paired together.

More specifically, I am wondering about SMHS gifted/accelerated programs. I understand the school does not rate as well, but I often find that the gifted/talented classes are just as good in lower rated schools. Even better, if you have experience with both MPHS and SMHS, did you prefer one more? Were they fairly similar? Is my impression that MP being 'better' merely just an impression? Also, how is resale in neighborhoods such as Royden, Quail Hollow, Beverly Woods, et all?

Thanks

South Meck is solidly middle of the pack for the county. It's not a school to worry over, and there are parents who see it as a district to move "into". Heck, Myers Park has its own discipline issues because kids with money, buy things they should be staying away from.
