If only my thread title was true. I like many of those seeking to relocate from the northeast, thought Charlotte was a mecca for a better quality of life. However, I was recently disappointed. The large number of transplants have of course over saturated the job market, making it difficult to find the ideal job. The apartment complexes are now under a bait and switch theory, advertising apartments with lower rents in their advertisements and websites, only to be informed when you do an investigative visit, that the lower advertised unit, isn't renovated, for a renovated unit would increase the monthly rent by $100 or more. The CharMeck school system needs an overhaul. Teachers who relocated to Charlotte from the northeast, have recently addressed their concerns and suggestions to Capitol Hill. Good luck to them on that mission. I won't even go into the homeless problem that's prevalent nowadays. Charlotte in my personal opinion, is not the place to be..........

Labor econ would say if you aren't getting the ideal job, YOU aren't the ideal candidate. Many transplants think running away from home will help them escape issues from home only to find it somehow follows them....

Hang in there, stay positive and don't let a few setbacks discourage you. No place is Mecca or utopia but considering the alternatives, Charlotte is still a great place to be. Life is filled with a slew of disappointments, handle it, stay strong and the course, things will get better.
I don't know your age but a lot of young people seem to think there's a pot of gold without making huge sacrifices. In my lifetime experiences, every frustration made it tempting to leave without a fight but I didn't and it served me much better in the long run. It reinforced confidence and the ability to overcome any obstacle....you won't appreciate the end journey without having to navigate some rough seas. The notion that there is an "ideal" job is fantasy. Just excel at your current job, no matter what it is, you'll eventually land much better positions as your experience and knowledge grows.

The issues with jobs and apartments are basic economics. If you're unhappy with your job prospects, either expand your search to other cities (plenty of nice location choices out there besides Charlotte that may be less competitive) or improve your skills. I personally would never move somewhere without a job lined up. For the apartments, of course the nicer, renovated units are gonna cost more. I don't know get why that's so terrible.
Public school complaints are rampant in many places around the country. What else can you expect when you rely on government-run things?
Homelessness is happening in every city, especially those that are growing more rapidly. That's not unique to Charlotte. Most of that is just poor individual choices. Sucks, but that's life.

I disagree, many aspects of the government run things are done exceptionally well, including most public schools. Public schools across the country produce high caliber functioning adults. The challenge with a growing city like Charlotte is managing many layers of things from sports, busing, etc. I think most times privatization is driven from a profit motive where people expect to siphon tax base funds to build their version of a public school. That's an easy approach but it creates an even larger chasm between the have and have-nots. You can't build enough gated communities to cast a set of people aside without an uprising....they ain't stupid, they know what's going on.

Yep and the sad part is that we are forced to pay for it out of our taxes even if we don't use it. In addition higher income areas have to pay higher properties taxes for bigger homes yet the redistricting is constantly happening so.... Socialism in a nut shell.

Looks like Charlotte is turning into an average city unfortunately. It would be smart if potential teachers from the northeast would check N.C. teacher salaries before they decide to move here. Teaching is not a profession from which one will make lots of money. I was a teacher. I thought that everyone knew that. I taught as a second career for the holidays and 2 1/2 months vacation. Some of the kids were great. Some were a nightmare. Parents mostly sucked. Fortunately, teaching was a temporary job. I actually had a degree which enabled me to make a good living before teaching.
Homelessness is a problem. Those that are physically or mentally incapable (no fault of their own) should have shelter and most do. But, that isn't a Charlotte problem, it is a worldwide problem that is just less so here than most places.
I believe that once you search other places comparable to Charlotte, you would see that it likely "is" the place to be for a few hundred thousand happy transplants. But good luck in your endeavors.
I encourage those of you with complaints about the public schools to contribute to their improvement and rally others with like-minded values to support your visions of change.
Schools are full of people. People make the change. We will be a better community for your efforts. The costs of abandoning public schools is difficult to over-estimate.
Get involved! We (the community) all need you!
