Charlotte Lakes recreation (Norman: to rent, beach, swimming)

Hi, coming from out of town, I’d like to understand the Charlotte lakes more. I hear they’re great for boating. And although I’d love to do that, I don’t have a boat and probably wouldn’t be able to afford to rent one. Are there other recreational activities to do in Lake Norman or Wylie? Is there a spot for public swimming or does anyone fish or?? How can the lakes be enjoyed without a boat? I’m used to being near the beach so am looking for all my water-related options for fun!

Mountain Island Lake is smaller and generally lacks the “idiots” that seem to gravitate to Lake Norman.
