So I am moving to CLT soon, since the drive from Lincolnton to my job in Charlotte is getting the best of me. So right now I in the process of apartment hunting. I have a budget of 950 to a MAX of around 1100.

The job itself is in the South part of Charlotte, about five miles away from South Park mall. One thing that is a major factor in my decision is the safety of the area; and a decent community. I've had far too many experiences with less than stellar neighbors who play music to the AMs; car breaks-ins, & watching tenants destroy apartments.

Camden Foxcroft
Strawberry Hill
Cameron South Park
The Arboretum
Legacy Arboretum

All should have units within your budget in South Charlotte and are in upscale and safe areas.

Appreciated. How much stock should I put into the reviews for these places, I feel like a majority of the apartments that aren't 2k a month in rent have wildly varying reviews from tenants?

Yah on that budget a majority of places aren't going to be overly safe. Crime is an issue here (a lot of shootings lately) and there is a huge issue with car break-ins and such. I live in an HOA and I've been broken into 3 times, rent is really going up too. Most safer areas imo are going to be around $1200-$1300

The funny thing is, when I first got offered this job I was hopeful I could afford a decent place when I make 25$ an hour; I guess I was far too used to my college apartment prices.

People typically only write a review for an apartment if they are angry. It is difficult nationwide to find many apartments with high online reviews because people tend to only complain.

For safety, you can use the CMPD's crime mapping tool: https://www.crimemapping.com/map/agency/65

So far, year to date, the reported crimes at the complexes I listed are below. There have been no violent crimes reported or robberies, but some property crime in the parking lot at some of the complexes [note: CMPD has indicated most larceny from auto in Charlotte is an unlocked vehicle].

Camden Foxcroft: 0 police reports
Strawberry Hill: 1 vandalism report, 1 larceny from auto
Cameron South Park: 1 vandalism report, 1 larceny from auto
The Arboretum: 3 larceny from auto
Legacy Arboretum: 1 larceny from auto

Seems like the only way to escape a break-in is to live in one of those secured garages. Geez.

You could live in Camden Foxcroft

Or you could lock your car door and put valuables out of site. Some break in's involve the window, but the vast majority are to an unlocked car. You could also look at a more upscale apartment with a secured parking lot, but with that comes a price premium. You could consider getting a roommate as well to get into those nicer complexes.

"5 miles from Southpark Mall" is still a fairly wide radius. If it's 5 miles south of the mall, that opens up areas like Fort Mill/Indian Trail/Matthews/Pineville.

The best way to get an honest opinion is to just drive to the apartment complex and ask people walking around about their experience.

Also on the review sites...look for how many reviews the reviewer have left. Some people sign up for a site just to complain about their one experience, vs. people that review multiple restaurants/establishments and whose reviews can be trusted more.

I have lived in CLT for many years and I have never been a victim
Of crime. It could happen but someone above gave solutions to avoid future problems. Lock your car at all times. Lock your apartment doors at all times. Pay attention to your surroundings. Be careful where you go especially at night. Use common sense when walking at night. Try not to move to areas where crime could be a problem. If you live in southeast CLT and are careful then you will not have problems. Try Providence Square apartments on Providence Road. I lived three years ago. Big apartments in a good area. I am not certain of the rates now but they used to be reasonable.
