Well, I got my notice today that the county reviewed my appeal and made a change to our assessment. We had a pre-purchase appraisal of 199,000 (which we thought was high) that I included in the appeal. We purchased the home for 174,430 and is very close to similar home being sold currently. The county changed our original assessment (221,000!!!!) to 181,000. This seems more in line- it's only been 5 months! Just wanted to share the good news- at least they are making some changes for some homeowners.

Congrats to you! Who says you can't fight city hall and win??
Just got notice today that my scheduled meeting is the 22nd, next Thursday, for my appeal. Have to make a decision if a $425 appraisal is worth investing or just put together my own arguements.
Well . . . I guess I would go for the appraisal but I know what you mean about investing more money . . .
Had you not already tried once to convince them or were you in the planning process earlier? Cause here are my thoughts. If they rejected it the first go round, then maybe for second go round an appraisal could make the difference.
It is a roll of the dice either way. I guess I would like to stack the odds my way by getting the appraisal. Seems to me if you still lose - even after getting an appraisal that backs up your basis for appeal - then you will know for sure you are dealing w/ people who simply will not admit they goofed up. But if you DO NOT get the appraisal and you lose . . . won't you always wonder if the appraisal in hand would have made the difference???
So I think . . . go for the appraisal. And keep us informed!!!! I am very interested in this and surely you will win your appeal if you have an appraisal to show . . . GOOD LUCK!!!
That makes alot of sense ani. Thanks for the advice and I will keep you posted as to my progress.
We are pulling for you. Your situation is one of the most egregious I have heard about - ever. With your background, I know you will put together a great presentation - and w/ the appraisal as you Ace . . . surely this is a winning hand. I certainly hope so! I have been watching to see you pop on and let us know what was transpiring . . .
Was wondering, that sounds really crazy, I presume you have the appraisal when you purchased the house, if its only 5 months old, it hardly seems worth getting another, but it may make all the difference.
