You can try Road Runner Light...I believe it's a little slower...but it still works great. Best of all...you can just call and switch...no need to change hardware or software. I use it and it works well with Vonage, video and music downloads. I think it's about $20 less a month
It's all about speed. If you need speed for gaming or working from home, don't leave Road Runner since they're the fastest, hands down.
If you get online just to check email, browse sites, and occasional music download or something, DSL will work for you.
One thing you can try is changing TV providers. Just yesterday we dumped TW Cable for DirecTV (having it installed tomorrow). Their price is lower, we get more channels that we'll actually watch, and in my experience, the picture is better...plus we save about $30 a month. Now I just have to figure out how in the world i will handle multiple bills for all my different services (TW's sales pitch to try to get us to stay)! Oh my! Whatever will I do?!?!

I did the same thing with Directv....It was a great move. I kept the Road runner but switched to the light service. Again....I have to say I can really not tell the difference in my speed of uploads and downloads...It doesn't hurt to try it. By switching to Directv and Roadrunner light..I save approximately $45 monthly. An added bonus is that I can get the NFL Sunday ticket!!
I use AT&T (formerly Bellsouth) for DSL and only have my phone hooked up for local use and my combined bill is less than $55 each month. I think it's about a half and half split between both.
I debated using road runner instead of AT&T/Bellsouth but it seems to be down rather often (according to friends who have it). I have ATT/Bellsouth for dsl and also my home phone service. My bill is +-$69 per month for both. I never knew there was an option for local service only! I don't use my home phone for long distance as it is free on my cell phone. I am going to call Bellsouth and check out my options - Thank you!
I'm using Roadrunner Lite (the lowest level available out of the "Lite" packages) and it is only 14.95 a month. A little slow but blazing compared to dial-up or Light DSL. I think the price may be a 1 year promotion and then it goes up to 19.95.
Clearwire is a good alternative if you live in their coverage area (inside 485).
There is no cable or phone required, although you can bundle it together with their phone service and have unliminted calling and internet for about 65$ a month.
If you are just browsing web pages, dowloading music, checking email it works GREAT! no difference between them and TW. If you are sending large files or downloading movies.....it might take a bit longer. All in all....the average person doesnt need anymore than 1Mbps.....the higher Mbps are just marketing schemes.
Plus theres no installation! You just plug it in and surf!
