NC is a big state so it's really hard to generalize.

Kannapolis is in Cabarrus county and is part of the Charlotte Metro area. Schools are in the Kannapolis City Schools District. Crime seems to be pretty low. Here is city-data's profile of Kannapolis. The biggest controversy lately was the removal of the Dale Trail signs.

Just scroll back and read as many threads as interest you - there is tons of info already here about NC. If you have some specific questions about specific areas ask those. In general, NC is a great state to be in - we have four seasons, but mild winters (only a little snow once or twice a year), beautiful beaches and mountains, great universites and colleges (Duke, the University of North Carolina, Wake Forest, Davidson - just to name a few), our politics are basically clean, you can find good schools in many places (not all, but many), we are the Christmas tree farm capital of the country, our cost of living is more affordable than a lot of other places and the people are usually warm and friendly
