Being that you are practically in Pittsburgh's back yard (and you are not considering the Burgh), I have a feeling Philly's urbanity will turn you off. I would choose Philly hands down however. What can I say, I think urbanity is more "livable", but it is all about what you want.

While I really admire your desire to be helpful Urban, I am just too tired of these kinds of threads comparing cities, LOL!!!

I lived in the Philly suburbs of South Jersey for over 40 years. What are you looking for? What type of employment are you looking for? Do you want city, suburban, small town, or rural?
I don't feel that either environment is suitable to sustain life.
But more seriously:
In Philadelphia the average person lives to the age of 72.3 years old. (reference Where you live could affect life and life span | Philadelphia Inquirer | 10/02/2008 (http://www.philly.com/inquirer/health_science/daily/20081002_Where_you_live_could_affect_life_and_life _span.html - broken link))
Charlotte Berkner lived to be 114 years and 180 days old. (Her name was Charlotte and it's the same as our city so they must be correlated.)
So I think this is proof that Charlotte wins by like 40 years. So if you wanna die at the young age of 72 pick Philly, otherwise, clone your genes to match Charlotte Berkner.

Considering that Philly averaged one murder per day at one point in 2007, the fact that it's seemingly an extension of Camden in some spots and their sports fans royally suck, well...good luck with that.

If your primary concern is being shot, I'd also avoid Gettysburg, PA. I've done some preliminary research and found out that they had one year that over 50,000 people were killed.

I am not moving there in the near future. I mostly just wanted to see what city I should visit this summer. I have been to both, but it has been a while.
