On a note about the future of University City. UNCC has had there EPIC center staff approved for $2 million annually. Bank of America is building there work from home office complex off of W Mallard Creek Church and Tryon. This complex will be built in two phases. The first phase will be 200 feet tall. The second 265 feet tall. URP is undergoing a new brand marketing campaign and the new student union is opening up at UNCC.
Didn't know BofA was moving out here. I knew there was someone big coming to that area (Mallard & Tryon) but it was all hush hush. They even caused a small ripple in the final routing of the Blue Line Extension...but it was short lived. UNCC won out.
I think UNCC would have easily won out because they will have the ridership who will probably actually use it. There were stories about the BofA move on Charlotte Business Journal. I really hope URP gains momentum. It certainly adds to traffic.
Yes, the Blue Line Extension will get to the University City area. Right now, while sales tax is down (which is CATS' primary cash cow), estimates keep bumping the schedule out. I think the worst estimate out there right now is 2019 for being open. I'm staying optimistic and thinking it'll get back on a tighter schedule, closer to the original which put it somewhere around 2015-16. I think the design is at 30% right now. Probably another year to 16 months for 100% plans to be done. Then it'll be bundled up and sent out to bid for 4-5 months...then it'll break ground on construction, pending no unforeseen large problems (permitting, environmental, etc.).
Hopefully the line does have a positive effect on the Tryon corridor as well as the route through UC.
I hope something out there will cause this process to be expedited. I wish the UCP would actually do something other than getting street signs to get the Blue Line up here. What is the puprpose of our MSD in this area anyway?
