Hi, my husband and I are looking for a recommendation of a few good places to live, Here is what we are looking for:
- easy (20 minute) drive to downtown Charlotte
-excellent schools
-lots of "life" around us- stuff for the family, but also bars, restaurants (and not chains!), night life, cultural and historical activities
-we like the metropolitan feel, but can deal with being 10 minutes away
-love lakes, but I think Norman and Wylie don't meet my above criteria (?)
-really like the idea of some of these new communities that have downtown areas, schools, pools, restaurants, hiking trails, etc, right in the "neighborhood" but are any close to downtown?
-Our price range is up to $700K, but if we can get a home for less, great!

If you can suggest zip codes and town names, that would be great so I can pull them up on Realtor.com. Names of good developments are appreciated too.

I really appreciate your responses! thank you!

Dilworth is a great community just south of Uptown. Sounds like you'd love it. If you'd like a website where you can see properties send me a pm.

Did you mean 20 minute drive during rush hour, or not during rush hour? There are some great areas to the south side of town including Dilworth and Myers Park, I would suggest others as well. Try zip codes 28203, 28207 & 28209 for places closer to uptown, and perhaps 28277 (Ballantyne and South Charlotte area), 28270, 28226, 28211, 28210. If you would like I could set up a search for you that sends you listings, and updates them daily -- may be easier than the search engine on realtor.com. Best of luck to you and feel free to PM me if you would like additional help

How about 5 minutes or less to uptown? I think the PERFECT place for you is the Elizabeth neighborhood - it is just so nice with great older homes in the shadow of uptown Charlotte. Here is an MLS number of one currently listed, check it out: 646827

Anything east of Park Road, North of Fairview Road, check out Barclay Downs, Picardy, Dilworth, Myers Park. If you have junior high or High school students, your schools of choice are excellent.

HI. JImBob says that the junior and high schools are excellent in these areas- how about the elementary schools?

Also, does anyone know- realistically- how long it takes from Baxter Village in Fort Mill SC into downtown and to the South Park Mall area? Thanks!

In the Elizabeth neighborhood the home that I posted the MLS # for the elementary assignment is Eastover Elementary - I'd give it two thumbs up for sure

Can't speak to this issue.

Wife's ex sister in law lives 2 miles from I-77 near Hwy 160, 20 minutes from SP, 20-30 minutes to downtown during AM rush hour with no wrecks. PM rush hour 25-35 minutes with no wrecks.

For Under $700K you should have a good assortment of choices. Meyers Park and South Park would probably suit your needs.
