Doesn't UP sound alittle more Positive....then DOWN? Maybe that is what they were trying to do with the "word" TOWN!! Of course....if you are talking about....everyone's seemingly favorite subject TAXES...well, that is a totally different animal all together!!!

PRW . . . The history of the city is over 250 years. So for something to have occurred in the last 20 years or so . . .yes, it is relatively new. Just b/c you are young, that doesn't mean it has always been this way.

I've heard two different reasons:
1. This area is/was called the Bible belt, the devil is "down" in h*l*, and God is up in Heaven....
2. The "uptown" area is on on a hill, obviously not very much of one.

Just thought I'd throw in the two things I've heard.

UPtown....DOWNtown....In Town or Out of Town....if you are North of the city....it could be Downtown...or if South of the city, it could be UPtown...as long as a person knows where they are going...or have been...I am sure the city will thank you for being there!!!

Even if it was a PR move by the CoC or whomever...... this explanation atleast satisfies the "logic" behind it -- and I'm all for when things are logical!

I've also heard it called "center city." I would consider that unique, however, I've heard people in Philadelphia use that term as well.

Yup, & there's nothing central about Center City Philly.

I still say downtown ... so don't let it bother you ... now we are hearing "Center City" ... so is ... what was downtown ... then uptown ... now Center City?

I am across the border ... as a kid we always made the trip on Thanksgiving Day 'downtown' Charlotte to see the Carrousel Parade. In those days ... the next day ... Friday ... was just that ... Friday ... no color designation as it's now called "Black Friday" the media, ad & marketing agencies have proved over the years they can brainwash us!

I have heard the real reason it's called Uptown was that when Charlotte was founded, they located the city on the highest point in the area, and then the town spread outwards...now, no, it's not very high up, but it was higher up than the areas around it, so the people would say they were going "Up to Town". I know in the late 80s, is when they started calling it Uptown, but many newcomers still refer to it as downtown...it takes time...as for Atlanta, I don't think they have anything called "Uptown"...they have Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead, and Perimeter Center...each of those areas has it's own impressive skylines though, especially, the Midtown Atl skyline.
