As a lot of you know, the closest mountain hiking to Charlotte is west, just past Gastonia, at Crowders Mt. Now, after several years of a strong volunteer effort, a new ridge trail has been blazed to connect Crowders Mt to King's Mountain National Battlefield. There's a new ranger station and trailhead off of exit 5 on I85 south. It was easy to find and worth the trip for a nice walk in the woods. It was somewhat up and down in places, but for the most part would be very kid friendly. Here are a few pics to show anyone interested what to expect:

I believe it is six miles from Boulders Access to the Pinnacle at Crowders. Then you'd have to hike another 1.5 miles down from the Pinnacle to the Visitor Center

A facility is being built, between Exit 8 & Exit 5, on Battleground Road, to connect into that.

To get to that facility, when it's done, take Exit 8 (York Road) towards Kings Mountain (aim for the Mickey D's to go in the right direction). Going north on York Road, go left on Gold St., then left on Battleground.

I WISH it was that isolated, lol - sadly you can hear the distant rumble on traffic on I85. It's not my favorite hike by any means, just one of the closest ones to Charlotte
