I was just browsing the SC (not NC) driver's manual. We don't know yet whether we will be living in Union County, NC or across the border in SC, but I suspect York County, SC. Anyway, the manual says the maximum speed limit in a residential area is 30mph. Is that correct? A practice test I took said 25mph. What is the speed limit in residential areas in NC?

Thanks

City limit laws are 35mph unless otherwise posted. Most neighborhoods are 25mph.

I should clarify that the question was if it is UNPOSTED what is the maximum speed limit in a residential area. I always thought it was 25, but the manual says 30.....

If there isn't a sign on the street and many residential streets are unmarked, then the NC regulation you cite applies. 30 mph. Cities can override this like Charlotte with the citywide 35 mph limit but that isn't relevant to the test. However there is another section of the book that says a regulation sign, like a speed limit sign, always overrides anything else. This is why you will see signs in neighborhoods like 25 mph. This is common in Charlotte because neighborhoods will often petition the city to lower the speed, especially on cut thru roads.
