Last week I got my Honda Odyssey 1996 EX serviced at Crown Honda. I noticed they are listed on the https://apps.dot.state.nc.us/dmv/emissions/ViewStations.aspx?co=MECKLENBURG (broken link) website as an inspection company.

A couple days ago I got my licence plate renewal document in the mail. When I went online to renew it, I saw the message that warns me to make sure my vehicle has been inspected before proceeding. A similar message is also stated on the renewal document itself.

My question is this: Is a vehicle inspection something special or would that have been covered under my service last week?

Thanks!

It's something "special", ie, it isn't part of regular service. You have to have a specific safety inspection, where they check head/tail lights, tire wear, windshield wipers, window tint, etc. They have to provide a report to the DMV that you have passed it.

That happened to me too but I think you have to ask specifically for an inspection; otherwise, the people at the service center won't do it. I got my car serviced at Dodge last month, and there was no saying in the receipt that they inspected it for me, so I will have to have my car inspected before applying for the license plate renewal, online or not.

If you got an inspection they should have given you a written report. It also costs $30. Sometimes they will put the report in a glove box.

This is what I dont like about the new system that doesnt require a sticker on your windshied to let you know its time for the inspection..Its backward progress if you ask me. Before you had to have it registered BEFORE they would inspect it now its a guessing game at to what comes first and WHEN.

They changed the law. When your plate expires then its time to be inspected. Just look at your tag and you'll know when the time is up.

I'm late on this, but the new rule is that your tags and inspection are due at the same time. You can inspect your vehicle up to 90 days before it is due and not lose any time on the inspection, if you try before that the machine will kick it back. This 90 day window is handy for people that have vehicles with check engine lights, inspect it 60 days before it is due, if it fails, you have 60 days to get it repaired, still get a free re-inspection and keep the vehicle legal.
