The DW's cell phone plan contract is expiring in a week. Its through sprint/nextel and we have the 450 minute/month plan. Rate is 39.99/month however w/taxes & fees its roughly $45.
My question is should I even bother looking at something cheaper? How are pay as you go plans? I have a business acct w/Verizon through work, I was thinking adding a "family member" might give us a better deal...worst case, I could renew for another year...
She uses anywhere from 250-450 minutes per month.
Just looking for some suggestions on which direction to go...
Not sure about pay-as-you-go, but I'm not sure if you will find a standard plan with one of the major carriers for much less than you are paying now. Although with a "family share" type of plan, you might be able to find one for the both of you that works out to a bit less than $40.00 per month (before fees) per person.
I will say this - you need to be proactive in terminating your contract should you switch providers, as most major carriers will simply renew your contract automatically at the end of the term. If you are going to switch providers, I would contact Sprint / Nextel ahead of time to find out what their process is for non-renewal of a contract, and find out what you need to do to prevent an automatic renewal, just to make sure they don't jerk you around and wind up charging you a termination fee.
The easiest option there is to simply tell them you do not want the contract renewed at the end of the term - in which case they should just shut the phone number down at the end of the last day of the contract. However, that may inhibit the ability to carry the same phone number over to another provider as that number will become inactive at that time as well (assuming that is even a factor for you). If you decide to go with, say, Verizon, I would call them and tell them you are looking to switch and ask if they are willing to cover any termination fees to your old provider if you sign with them - they were doing this back when that law was passed to make cel numbers portable across carriers. Not sure if that is still the case, but it can't hurt to ask.

I appreciate the help
Family plans are by far, better than individual.
We currently have 800 anytime, free cell to cell & nights and weeks free from 7pm, bill is approx $55 a month for two phones.
with sprint, they usually dont renew ur contract after it expires, until you call them and ask them to renew/upgrade. you automatically go on month to month.
if you wish to renew, then you can play with retensions/account services of sprint and ask them what better they'd like to do if you plan to switch to AT&T or Verizon and they may better the plan by either discounts or free add ons and renewing the plan.
I used to work for a cellphone store and take this from me, a lot of people want to save a dollar or two and switch carriers every 2 years or so when their contract runs out, but doing that you will be missing out on the long term customer or loyalty discount which you can ultimately get by staying with one single provider. I'd say if you arent having any issues with the network and if its only price which isnt exorbitant, stick with the provider to build your good-will there..
1. sprint has employer discounts upto 25% off your bill, see if you qualify for those.
2. talking to account services/retentions will lower your bill or better your plan.
3. there a lot of tricks and negotiation techniques discussed on sprint forums (sprintusers.com)
4. legacy sprint plans which arent offered anymore are still available. folks who are on contract with legacy plans would like to transfer the line to you and u can takeover their contract. (I did this for my sister and got a 500 minute plan, with unlimited textnig, unlimited data, unlimited TV, and unlimited much more for 29.99 a month)
If you still want prepaid/month to month and wanna go away from sprint, I have seen that pageplus cellular is having good deals, I think they have $30 a month for 1200minutes and some amount of data and messaging too included. Its verizon network so its better than some other.
I have a phone already....so I don't have to buy a phone..
What's the catch?
