Before the days of the big warehouse stores, if someone wanted to fill their freezer full of meat, they would go to a farm and contract on a pig or a cow. (or a 1/2 of one) It would be slaughtered, dressed, and then packaged in common cuts and labeled & wrapped in white paper to go in the freezer. I don't know if such a thing is possible now but when I was growing up here, almost every family did this.
That's what we ended up doing. Great price. Ended up being around $2 per lb which included a variety of steaks, roasts, stew meat, cube beef, ribs and hamburger.
