EXactly if parents where chaperon the police could have prevented that robbery last night no they are stuck at the prom
Teachers could be home and enjoying their break from the kids
A school with cops at its prom SUX

Yeah, I'm having a hard time believing that, too. $80/hour is equivalent to a $170,000 salary. No cop makes that, even with time and a half.

Perhaps the prom generated $5000 and the school ended up with a profit?

If there was an assault/rape/other crime (like happened recently in some inner city highschool), we would all be up in arms about the lack of security. A parent volunteer is no substitute for police presence.
EXACTLY. Thank you!

As I stated previously, off duty officers are generally paid $20 an hour for providing security at an event. SOMETIMES they can actually be paid up to $40, but $80 seems a bit of an exaggeration.

And if some tragic, criminal act occurred at any prom (like a rape or a shooting) and security had not been in place the school would be sued for gazillions of dollars and we'd all be calling the school and its leaders irresponsible and downright stupid

A school HAS to offer real security (not a mama or daddy with a baseball bat) at large events, and I can't believe some of the posters on this thread don't understand that.

I paid the cops $100/hour to close off a street for me so we could get a long truck loaded, but that was in MA about 4 years ago. All they did was block off the street with cruisers & play solitaire in their cars.

lol, well, you can obviously pay whatever you want as an individual! I'm sure if Donald Trump came to Charlotte and wanted some CMPD officers to provide security for a large party he were throwing he might pay them handsomely too .

But the general going rate if you contact CMPD and request an officer is $20-40 an hour - $5.00 more an hour if you want them to bring a police car and have it visible.

That was the going rate in my town, not what I'd have chose to pay them.

Those kids at the prom must have sure needed watching but whats an extra 4000 dollars. They got plenty of money to spend.Lets support out local 80.00 an hour police. It was hard work for sure.

I figured that, or why else be so generous, lol!

Well, the going rate here is not nearly so high. Though like I said, the Donald Trumps among us could offer as high as they like
