I go over the border all the time for gas and try to fill up in Charlotte proper only if I am completely low or just out of time.
Of course I live maybe 3-5 min drive from the border, so it's a no-brainer for me. My husband works in S.C. so that's where he fills up as well. After many years of extremely high gas prices in IL I almost feel as if I've earned the right to buy the cheaper gas
I live in Steele Creek, and frequently I cross into SC on 160 to get gas and groceries. But I certainly don't see a difference anywhere near 20 or 30 cents a gallon. The BP in Rivergate is usually only 5-10 cents more than the gas stations along 160 in SC. So that's where I go if I don't have another reason for making the longer drive.
I guess I'm just lucky in that gas in Steele Creek (at least at that BP anyway) seems to be a little cheaper than most of Charlotte. Not a bad backup plan if I don't get to SC.

Yes another perk of living in Steele Creek! I sometimes get gas in SC since I'm so close. If I lived in another area it wouldn't be worth the drive. Now I'm thinking about going grocery shopping there too.
We can cross the border and be at Frugal's in under 10 minutes, so we generally go there to re-stock the bar. If I just need a bottle of something, I won't make the trip to save a buck or two, but if we're buying several bottles, then we'll go there. Also, besides the price, Frugal's has a much larger liquor selection than the NC liquor stores by us.
While we're there, I will fill up the gas tank if needed, but, again, I won't make a special trip just to save a dollar or two on 5-10 gallons of gas....but then I do not drive that much (I fill up my tank once every 2-3 weeks) so gas costs are not a big part of our budget. If I was filling up a lot more frequently, I would likely make it a point to stop south of the border for gas.
For wine, we prefer the Wine Shop in Rivergate, so we will usually buy wine here in NC.
I work near Steele Creek so I head to SC every week to gas up. Saves me a few bucks and every little bit helps!
