My wife and I are relocating to the area from Boston at the end of June. She'll be working in downtown Chattanooga, I telecommute. We both grew up in rural areas, and haven't really acclimated to the pace of life here in Boston.

As we're looking at areas to settle, we keep coming back to North Harrison (sort of opposite Soddy Daisy). For those of you who live in the area, is that commutable? Safe? I don't assume EBP lines run out that far so, for my job, is Comcast the only player in the high speed internet space?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Depending on which part of Harrison, you may actually have EPBFi service: http://projects.timesfreepress.com/2.../gig_mbps.html

If you have an address in mind, enter it here: https://epbfi.com/

As for commute, it depends on how much you value free time (i.e., not sitting in a car) vs. how much you value rural life. A long time ago I thought I wanted rural life more, and would up sitting in a car for 45 minutes (minimum) each way every day and absolutely hated it. When I moved to Chattanooga I stayed closer in. That said, a friend of mine commutes to downtown Chattanooga from Decatur every day, so he'll pass you in the wee hours every morning.

Depending on where you are looking in Harrison, your commute should be anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes on a normal day.

Thanks, Jwkilgore! Some awesome info there. We'll have to play with the EPB service locator when we're looking at specific addresses.

Only 45 minutes I can handle. I work 11 miles away here in Boston and my commute is never less than 1:15, usually more like 1:40. Is that 45 minutes in relatively light traffic, or gridlock the whole way?

We loved Chattanooga proper when we visited last year, so an in-city move isn't out of the question. I think we're just reacting to four years of urban overload at the moment. Thanks!

A mix of traffic, and it depends on your route and time of day. For the best estimate, the next time you visit get up really early and drive out there. Then try to drive downtown. Reverse the trip around 5pm. Make sure you do it on a day when school is in session because summer traffic vs. school year traffic almost makes it like driving in two different cities. There are ways to get around most of the biggest jam areas.

whew, I work 13 miles from work and normal time for travel is 20 minutes at most. I could not imagine! I go from East Brainerd to end of Hixson.
Only a few times a year have I been held up in traffic, usually in the evenings and around xmas time.

I live in Harrison near Harrison Bay State Park and my husband works downtown and his commute is about 30 minutes each way. It's not bad and since he goes Hwy. 58 to Amnicola Hwy the traffic is usually moving and not at a standstill. We live in a nice neighborhood and that farther you go out Hwy. 58 the more rural it is. I just saw 8 acres for sale just a mile or so from our house.

There are a couple of local restaurants and a Bi-Lo grocery store close by. Driving out Hwy. 58 from downtown has mostly fast food restaurants and pay day lenders :/ But, I can get to Ooltewah, Hamilton Place area or Hixson in about 20 minutes.
