Broke all of the records here this morning, it was -32.
On Monday it's supposed to be 52.

That's like it going from 20 to 104 in a few days!!
Expect some wind.

DTE is now saying they want people to reduce electrical use as well "To protect the grid" This simple is not going to happen. Since most people are home anyway, they should look at shutting down office buildings and factories and setting the heat to 40.

It is surprising how fragile out infrastructure is. This is amazingly cold, but not hugely different than amazingly cold weeks we have had in past years. We have not had -35 windchill in a very long time, but -20 is not that uncommon.

Since this is automotive forum, it is amazing the toll the cold takes on cars. I had a piece of "leather" upholstery crack when i pushed my hand against it getting into the van. I am pretty sure a strut blew out ont he way to work (or maybe it is just frozen) and all of the tires are dangerously low.

Moving this thread to the GM subforum highlights how ridiculous the policy is. That the example given is GM is almost irrelevant to the real topic.

Wind chill is irrelevant to cars and other nonliving things.

Do cars have a minimum recommended operating temperature? It would be one of those pages in the owner's manual hardly anyone notices, much less reads, but it seems that engineering a vehicle for a normal temperature range - maybe 0-120F? - would mean that cold conditions in particular could exceed material safety limits. It will be interesting to see how many reports of extreme-cold failure are reported.

...and a potentially interesting thread of immediate topical interest dies on the frozen wastelands of the brand forums...

I was under the impression that they had their own energy conversion facility.
