My fiance and I are from Chicago but are only familiar with the city and the north-shore suburbs. We have lived in Memphis the last couple of years but have recently relocated back to the Chicago-area.

The closest areas you would like are Schaumburg, Palatine, and Arlington Heights. Schaumburg has some nightlife, but it is spread out. Arlington Heights has a nice downtown area with some bars and restaurants. Palatine's downtown is becoming more built up. Each will run you about a 45 minute commute each way to Crystal Lake.

My sister lives in Crystal Lake and I live next door to Crystal Lake. It is a great town with lots to do depending on which area you move to. Also, if you are considering having children the schools are great.

Crystal Lake is OK, especially if you don't have to commute. No reason to live anywhere else.

If you are looking for the hotbed of excitement, it is not Crystal Lake.
However, Crystal Lake and parts north are some of the most affordable areas in Chicagoland to live/rent in.
And commuting in Chicago is a royal hassle.
The real question is whether you want to commute a distance five days a week and live in an "exciting" area OR commute 1-2x per week to more "fun locations."
