I recently acquired a job in Lansing Illinois. I am looking for a place to live that is safe. I would like to live north of lansing, closer to downtown chicago. I do not mind driving around a half hour to work. I am looking to spend around 1000 dollars in rent a month. Safety is priority. Any suggestions?

If you're talking about the South Side of the city of Chicago, you want to post this in the Chicago forum, not the Chicago suburbs forum.

If you're really meaning the South Suburbs rather than South Chicago, you want to change the title of this thread. You may also want to post in the NW Indiana forum. Munster, IN, which borders Lansing, is highly sought after by suburban types, for example.

If you're wanting to be closer to the city, I would live in the city itself. Depending on what you're looking for, how close to downtown you want to be, and how you define "safe;" Beverly, Hegewisch, Bridgeport, Pilsen, and Hyde Park are all Chicago neighborhoods where you could live and have a 30-ish minute commute to work. You can find things about these neighborhoods on the Chicago forum. The burbs in between Lansing and Chicago probably don't have enough more to offer you than Lansing/Munster to justify the commute, IMO.

Hyde Park.

"South Chicago" is the name of a rundown industrial neighborhood around 92nd Street and Commercial Avenue. You mean the south side of Chicago.

Or he means the South Suburbs (since he's posting in the suburbs forum). Who knows, since he still hasn't responded.

If s/he does mean the actual South Side, I agree Hyde Park is one possibility, but of the places I listed it's probably least likely to meet his/her 30 minute commute requirement, due to its distance from the Dan Ryan. (I know this commute well.)
