Hi All,

Is there a resource for foreclosed farms and farmlands? There is an individual in my church who wants to start working with bee's and honey. So, the second part of the question is how can one know that bee hives are going to be acceptable on a given farm?

I think your beekeeper wannabe friend needs to do some more research. Most Illinois farmland is a deathtrap for bees. Bees can't eat corn. Bees need pollen. Orchards, flower farms, or crops that flower can feed bees. Corn bad fer bees. Bees can survive if the farm is near a river usually, but even that's sketchy. Good luck.

Have your friend check out this website for The Illinois State Beekeepers Association...Illinois State Beekeepers Association
Another good site from the Illinois Department of Agriculture...THE ILLINOIS BEES AND APIARIES PROGRAM
And here is a good blog about beekeeping in Illinois...Basic Beekeeping

Bees are perfectly capable of surviving in Illinois, and you don't need farmland to have bees. There is a house in my neighborhood that has several hives in the backyard. You would have to check city ordinances first though.
