A little bit of background:

We are both mid-20's, living in Wicker Park at the moment. We like being able to get to almost anything by walking, but we don't really like all the hipsters. I work at O'Hare, and she works in the Loop, so we both rely on the Blue Line at the moment.

She just got a job in Northbrook, so we don't really want to keep living here in the city because we fear her commute will be too long. We both have cars, so I can easily drive to the airport. We were looking into Evanston, because it seems like a good mix of young people, shorter commute for her, and easy access to the city via CTA/Metra (We'd like to be able to get to the loop relatively easily without driving). Are there any other places we might be overlooking? Thanks in advance!

Live in Northbrook. Straight shot down on 294 to ORD. Also, Metra is easy to go to the loop.

I tend to agree with the hint that is being given by cubsoxfan -- if work is on the "far side" of Northbrook, closer to 294 than to the Edens the commute from Evanston could be rather nasty AND if the job at O'Hare is such that you need to actually be at the airport / facilities on the west or south sides of the campus it will mean LOTS of extra car time for both of you compared to someplace mmaybge even inside Chicago, like near Harlem & Irving, where (thank goodness...) hipsters are all but nonexistent...

There are LOTS of places along the Blue Line where folks do not wear skinny jeans, drink cheap beers and so other hipster affectations that will be cheaper /easier ...

The original post said he works near Ohare. I would rather live in Northbrook than Harlem/Irving or any other area along 90.

Default Frankly, me too...

...but he also said he is mid-20s and most folks that age seem to prefer to have 606xx zip codes and easy access to public transit...

He also said, "we don't really like all the hipsters". The diveristy is the beauty of city living and if he's considering Evanston, the north side of Chicago is not for these mid-20's! You either party hardy or you get the hell out! I've been there, done it and know it!

I'd look into the "Parks". Jefferson Park / Irving Park / Edison Park if you want to retain a city address and be on the NW side. If you're ok with the burbs, I'd consider Park Ridge & Des Plaines as well. Still somewhat close to the city, and a do-able commute to Northbrook and a piece of cake commute to O'Hare.

Apparently, that's all the third largest city in the United States is. Chicago is apparently nothing more or less than a giant playground for 20 somethings to "party hardy".

It's about time someone admitted to thinking that!
