I've heard that the water in Steger is subpar and actually dangerous to drink. Is there any truth to this or is it just urban legend or residents embellishing?

Isn't the water in Steger (certainly the Cook County part of Steger) the same Lake Michigan water drank in dowtown Chicago? No?

Sometimes the plumming in the house -not the water itself - can contribute to poor water quality.

There has been issues with the water in nearby Sauk Village. At one point this summer the village had to provide its residents with bottled water.

I haven't heard anything about Steger. Steger has a combination of Lake Michigan water and groundwater; unlike Sauk Village, which only utilizes groundwater.

Drinking water straight from the faucet in Steger is fine, I do it when I go back.
